Tips to Remove Hard Water Stains from Your Windshield!

Minerals like calcium and magnesium that are found in our water can wreak havoc on our plumbing systems, and they’re also a problem for our windshields and windows. Though the water on your glass will eventually evaporate, the minerals in the water will stay behind, causing stains that are typically hard to remove.

Though they’re not really a major driving hazard, these hard water stains don’t look so great, which is a problem when you have a fleet of vehicles representing your business. Continue reading to learn more about getting rid of those unsightly hard water stains and keeping your fleet vehicles in tip-top shape:

  • Vinegar solution: Distilled white vinegar mixed with water is a cheap and effective cleaner for any glass surface, which is great when you’re trying to save some money on fleet maintenance in Visalia, CA. A 50/50 solution of vinegar and water typically does the trick, but you may need to adjust the vinegar ratio if your stains are especially bad. Spray the solution on your windshield, let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse it off with pure water.
  • Lemon: Instead of vinegar, you can use the same technique with lemon juice. Citrus has the same cleaning power as vinegar, and is just as inexpensive.
  • Baking soda and vinegar: If vinegar alone doesn’t do the trick, try adding some baking soda. Make a paste using baking soda and vinegar and lightly scrub it on your windshield with a brush, towel or sponge. Let the paste sit on your windshield for a bit and then wash it off with water.
  • Toothpaste: You brush your teeth every morning and every night with toothpaste to keep your teeth nice and white. Could the same product help keep your windshield looking nice, too? Possibly! Apply watered-down white toothpaste to the stains, let it sit and then scrub it with a toothbrush or soft cloth. Though it sounds unusual, this method has been known to work!
  • Abrasive cleaner: The all-natural remedies listed above aren’t for everyone. If that’s the case, go ahead and skip to using powerful abrasive cleaners! Powdered products like Comet and Bar Keepers Friend do wonders to eliminate all sorts of stains, especially on glass. Wet your windshield using water or a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. Next, sprinkle the powder on the glass and scrub it using a rag. The powdered granules should eliminate the minerals that caused the original stain. Be sure to rinse the glass thoroughly after you’re done to wash away the cleaner.
  • Professional help: If all else fails and you still can’t get rid of those stains, you may want to bring in the pros! Professional detailing will remove any hard water stains and will have your fleet looking better than ever.
